Yes today is the BIG day, the day when things go bump 😊
Yet where did it come from, why is it celebrated at all? Well like all good festivals it is one that was hi-jacked by the Christian church, a festival that predates their existence and was an inconvenience to the new and spreading religion.
The Celts celebrated the change of the season in to winter from their harvest (A form of new year), they it was also who started the whole thing of the wearing of costumes and the use of sweets. For the Celts the sweets were to appease wicked spirits and the costumes/masks were to frighten and confuse evil spirits. Then the Roman's always up for another festival added it to their calendar before the fledgling church from Rome tried to wipe it out all together.
So happy Samhain One and ALL, celebrate the joining of the worlds of the living and the dead, use your sweets to appease the less welcome and your masks to drive away the evil!

*1 Suspend a stick from the ceiling, an apple on one end and a candle on the other, then as it rotates the girls will jump and try and claim the apple. Obviously, there are 3 outcomes:
1: You claim the apple, cut it open and read the future
2: You miss entirely
3: You get a face full hot wax, I suspect there is a lesson in being “Right” for the mysteries of the apple at that moment
